It is meant to unlock Asian markets for Canadian oil, which is mostly exported to the United States now. Critics have also slammed the ownership of a pipeline project by the Liberal government, which they argue runs counter to Trudeau's ambitious climate goals. TMC had received a up to C$3 billion loan guarantee between late March and early May this year and had received a C$10 billion loan guarantee in 2022 from the federal government. Canada's finance ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the fresh loan guarantee. In June, a finance ministry spokesperson said the loan guarantee was "common practice" and did not reflect any new public spending.

Companies Kinder Morgan Inc FollowJuly 19 (Reuters) - Kinder Morgan (KMI.N) on Wednesday missed Wall Street estimates for second-quarter revenue as the pipeline operator transported lower volumes of gasoline and diesel through its network. Energy output has yet not reached pre-pandemic levels as companies have kept a tight rein on production, pressuring pipeline operators' transport volumes. While Kinder Morgan's volumes for gasoline and diesel fell in the reported quarter compared to the previous year, its total delivery volumes rose on higher natural gas volumes. The Houston, Texas-based firm posted revenue of $3.50 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $4.55 billion, according to Refinitiv data. Photographer: Ben Nelms/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesThe supply chain is in turmoil again with International Longshore & Warehouse Union West Coast Canada members walking off the job after a key union caucus voted down a tentative deal that had temporarily ended the West Coast ports strike last week. Rob Ashton, president of the ILWU Canada, said in a statement that it did not believe the recommendations had the ability to protect union jobs. His group estimated that the first strike would cause an average 6-8 weeks of supply chain disruption before conditions would return to normal. The National Association of Chemical Distributors told CNBC some chemical companies are expected supply chain congestion until October as a result of the strike. Critical chemicals that go into food, cleaning, water purification, and personal care, among many others, flow through the West Coast ports of Canada and down to the United States.

Companies Kinder Morgan Inc FollowJuly 19 (Reuters) - Pipeline and terminal operator Kinder Morgan (KMI.N) on Wednesday posted lower-than-expected second-quarter revenue, hurt by lower commodity prices. Kinder Morgan faced lower commodity prices, higher interest expense in the second quarter as well as higher sustaining capital expenditures versus the prior year period, President Kim Dang said. The Houston-based company said earnings from its products pipelines fell about 4.3% to $286 million, while earnings from the transportation of CO2 fell about 17.4% to $175 million, due to lower realized prices. A lot was riding on these important measures of inflation after the scorching-hot ADP jobs report last week. Here are 3 things you need to know for the week ahead: 1. Stocks could continue to gain momentum in the week ahead as traders turn their attention to earnings results after the past week's softer inflation news. The major benchmarks are headed for a positive week Friday after encouraging consumer and wholesale inflation in June cemented the likelihood that the Federal Reserve is closer to the end of its rate-hiking campaign. Some market participants expect this period could mark the trough for earnings, and urge traders to pay more attention to forward guidance. "And that's a great sign for the market and market health." REUTERS/Nick Oxford/File PhotoONEOK on Sunday said it would pay $18.8 billion in cash and stock for Magellan to diversify its natural gas and gas-liquids transportation business into oil and oil products. “The deferral of Oneok’s corporate cash taxes seems like a major deal component,” Mizuho analysts wrote in a research note. “ONEOK and Magellan have geographical overlap among their assets, but their primary businesses are very different,” Morris said.
Morning Bid: Crowded bonds unnerved

This has some wondering if the recent dash for cash and top-rated bonds has become a bit crowded and how much more tightening central banks have to do. As we move into the weeds of the first-quarter U.S. earnings season, it's been a mixed bag so far. That clearly unnerved UK government bonds - where 10 year yields jumped 10bps - but it also jarred sovereign bonds around the world. Elsewhere, further signs of healing were evident in the global bank funding market. Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (8316.T) sold $1 billion of additional tier-1 debt, the first major global bank to sell the risky securities since similar bonds issued by Credit Suisse were wiped out last month.

HOUSTON, March 11 (Reuters) - The United Steelworkers union (USW) said in a letter to members it was misled by Lyondell Basell Industries (LYB.N) about possible buyers for the company’s Houston refinery, which the company has set for permanent closure late this year. The letter was sent on Friday to members who work at the Lyondell refinery. According to the letter, the union said it would contact government officials about the would-be buyers of the refinery and take further actions involving union members in the future. Offers made on the refinery when Lyondell was weighing a possible sale in 2021 fell short of the refinery's value, he said. Sources familiar with the matter said Kinder Morgan Inc (KMI.N), which operates a terminal near the refinery, approached Lyondell about a possible sale.
Bonds have become more attractive as Treasury yields approach their highest levels in a decade — but certain top dividend-paying stocks also provide competitive payoffs to investors. Take a look at some of the stocks that can compete with bond yields, and where analysts expect them going forward. Eggs producer and distributor Cal-Maine Foods has the highest dividend yield of 9.5% on the list. Kraft Heinz offers investors a dividend yield of 4.1%, and the company has a debt-to-equity ratio of 42.7%. Several energy names also made it on the elite dividends list, such as CONSOL Energy , Coterra Energy , Kinder Morgan and Devon Energy.
Executives largely shrugged off a new 1% tax on stock buybacks as the cost of doing business. Even with the 1% tax, stock buybacks are the preferred way to return cash to shareholders, Mr. Krone said at a conference in February. Stock repurchases by Berkshire and the publicly traded companies it owns benefited investors, he wrote in the Feb. 25 letter. For one, share repurchases typically don’t commit them to continuing to buy shares, and offer flexibility on timing. “We only really consider share repurchases when we have an attractive repurchase price,” the CFO said.

Canadian gas company Enbridge pledged up to $1 billion to a US firm turning food waste into energy. Oil and gas companies see a green opportunity from food waste like rotting spinach but some climate advocates say it's more like greenwashing. The company's software tracks retailers' food waste and Divert then recovers what can be donated to food banks. The plan is to build 30 plants, enough to manage 5% of US food waste; Divert now handles about a half percent. Making gas from waste can avoid greenhouse gas emissions that seep out of landfills.

Judging by Wednesday's reaction, world markets reckon Japan will eventually abandon its ultra-loose monetary policy despite a stubborn doubling down this week - and overseas ructions may be less than feared. But after some wild gyrations on the initial announcement, the market reaction was rather muted on balance. Japan's Nikkei (.N225) ended 2.5% higher, but it closed before the yen rebound in European hours. The release of December U.S. producer price, retail sales and industrial production numbers later on Wednesday now takes centre stage. Traders gather on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Friday, March 18, 2016. There is little optimism for stocks among Wall Street's foot soldiers, according to the latest fund manager survey from Bank of America. As BofA pointed out, that means the so-called "pain trade" in the stock market is higher, and any sudden rally would catch investors off-guard. But Wall Street survey be damned, stocks seem to be on the brink of a rare, bullish trifecta. The surge has pushed the world's most largest crypto token to levels not seen since before the fall of FTX.

More than 1.5 million homes and businesses lost power, oil refineries in Texas cut gasoline and diesel production on equipment failures, and heating and power prices surged on the losses. Oil and gas output from North Dakota to Texas suffered freeze-ins, cutting supplies. Freeze-ins - in which ice crystals halt oil and gas production - this week trimmed production in North Dakota's oilfields by 300,000 to 350,000 barrels per day, or a third of normal. Power prices on Texas's grid also spiked to $3,700 per megawatt hour, prompting generators to add more power to the grid before prices fell back as thermal and solar supplies came online. That is the biggest drop in output since the February 2021 freeze knocked out power for millions in Texas.
